“I have been impressed by the quality and the depth of analysis in the book… This book should be useful to beginners in their career as well as senior staff in the field of Operations who can identify elements that influence their management style on a daily basis.

The book addresses many questions on interpersonal relationships, hierarchy and best ways to deal with conflicts…

I read the chapter on gossips with lots of interests... The tips at the end of the book are very useful, especially for those who travel a lot on official missions… On many levels, the book is a very useful source of inspiration...”

  Editorial Review

Odette Murat has written a very engaging book that should be of great interest to those entering the world of work, as well as to those who have long been employed and will recognize many of the characters and issues she covers.

From the extensive collection of workplace incidents presented, it is clear that Ms. Murat has deep first-hand knowledge of human behavior on the job, from the maneuvers of top executives on down to the actions of workers at the lowest ranks of a company or organization. What comes through clearly is the overwhelming desire on the part of all to “make a good impression” and “get ahead” whether by legitimate or less than honorable means.

It is clear that Ms. Murat’s many years as a “Chief of Operations” has given her a comprehensive overview of many situations that affect the world of work – personal as well as business. Throughout she strives to give the reader who will be responsible for dealing with similar problems a means of “taking the highroad.” Consistently, she advocates striving to adhere to principles of honesty and decency, yet admits that there may be times when comprises are unavoidable.

While applicable to any employment situation, the book will be especially useful for people working abroad, especially in developing countries. The author makes it clear that knowledge of local mores, customs and values cannot be over-emphasized.

Thought-provoking cartoons, quotations and case studies enliven the text. Especially useful for those with no prior experience in securing and maintaining household help (which is a necessity in many developing countries) are a series of vignettes that serve as cautionary tales.

The book should prove popular for in-service training programs, as well as for use in university-level business classes. It covers a lot of useful material which may not otherwise find its way into the normal curriculum.
